Having been looking at DSLR's for years and buying compacts instead I finally took the plunge. I liked the spec's of the 550D and was waiting for the prices to come down on ebay. They never did. When the 700D came out I thought I would look again. No, still expensive. Then I came across Camera Paradise and found I could buy a new 650D for the same price as a used 550D on ebay. Job done. My initial purchase was with the stock 18:55 lens. I then learnt about f' factors and considered my main motivation for buying... years of indoor photo's of the kid's at birthday parties and other low light chaotic events with photo's that cannot be sent to grandparents as they are of low quality. So apparently a low F factor is the answer. So I bought a cheap 50mm f1.8. Does the job completely as long as you are willing to walk around and put yourself in position-a little embarrassing at times. Apparently the 650D and others have a smaller camera aperture (frame) which limits the overall light input and hence performance but still obviously streets ahead of my previous high end compacts. I half wish I bought a full frame DSLR but for the expenditure and the amount of use it is probably unnecessary. Buy one, it is easy to use, gives you a new field to study for hours on the internet if you choose, and teaches you as you go.

Purchased for still images and the 650D doesn't disappoint. It's light to carry and buttons and features are where you expect to find them on a Canon EOS. Battery life is on the low side but spares are cheap. The adjustable touchscreen makes changing settings easy. When teamed with the 40mm and 50mm prime lenses the 650D delivers excellent quality portrait images as well as great landscape and streetscape shots. Highly recommended as an entry level SLR for still images. Video is acceptable but not as good as the new 700D system.
