I purchased this extension tube set to allow me to take closer shots of animals and macro shots of interesting small things on an upcoming holiday. I had a very small amount of time to play with these before using them on holiday, and its really worthwhile trying the different sizes with your different lenses, to see where your focus range is, because it'll be a very small range and might be way closer than you thought. Also its good to try at different apertures so you can work out what the out of focus area will look like.
I'd researched beforehand to know that on my 24-70mm lens I could only use the smallest extender, and it meant my lens was very very close to the subject. On holiday I did use this to try to photograph a tiny yellow flower about the size of a pea, and ended up with yellow fringing/flare around each petal, which looked terrible. On reflection, it was taken in a rush on f/2.8, so the blurred bit around the petals was probably just that most of the petals were not in sharp focus. A fellow photographer with a Canon 100mm L macro lens duplicated the shot and had a perfectly clear beautiful image, but may have been with a lot higher f/stop. I'm yet to figure out where these extension tubes will allow me to create great shots, and when to not use them, and what f/stop to use for each subject - this needs a lot of experimentation.
They were certainly ok for taking photos of iguanas that were accustomed to people. I used them with an excellent quality longer lens, so the lens wasn't right in their face, and it allowed me to fill the frame more with details of their faces, scales or feet.
I'm not really loving this extension tube set, as its requires a lot more time to learn how to take good photos with it, but if you have the time to experiment, go for it.
