Nikon Coolpix P610 Hands-On Review

The Nikon Coolpix P610, introduced in February 2015, replaces the Nikon Coolpix P600 with some worthy improvements while retaining some noteworthy features as well.
With a 16MP 1/2.3” BSI-CMOS sensor, wireless connectivity options like Wi-Fi, GPS, and NFC, 60x Optical Zoom, and other brilliant features, the Nikon shooter aims to impress, but do the exciting specs and features make it a worthy competitor to other camera’s in the market?
Let’s take a closer look and see if it’s actually worth your money.

60x Optical Zoom & "Snap-Back" Button

The 60x Optical Zoom is the main attraction of the camera. The zoom gives you 35mm focal length at a range of 24-1440mm. A feature called the Dynamic Fine Zoom allows a further 120x zoom, doubling your zooming capability, so no matter how far your subject is, chances are you can capture it without an issue.

The image quality is fine even it goes with 1440mm plus digital zoom. Though it is not sharp enough, the quality is still acceptable. The sign is still clear. Click below sample images and read the 100% version.

It is easy to lose focus on the subject when you are using a camera with lens as big as Nikon P610's. The Coolpix P610 however, does away with that dilemma by offering a “Snap-back” button. Located on the left side of the lens barrel, pressing and holding the button will help you zoom out and find your subject, and on release, the lens zooms back to the previous setting.
This video shows the “Snap-back” in action. The feature is convenient especially if you need to focus more than one object when zooming in. You will take long time to find the object without this button.
The camera sports a 3-inch screen that allows you to view your captures in a lot more than just one angle. The LCD is a high-resolution screen you can use to snap an accurate picture from above your eye-level or at a different angle than the usual front view. Unfortunately it is not a touchscreen.
If shooting videos is your thing, you are going to love this bridge camera. You can record Full HD 1080p videos from the device and later connect it to a HDTV to watch your capture on the big screen. Better yet, the Nikon P610 captures stereo sound to provide a great viewing experience. You can even capture amazing Time-Lapse sequences like below.

Improved Connectivity: GPS, NFC & Wi-Fi

Despite keeping the same design, the P610 is an improvement over the P600 in the connectivity department. The new version boasts a built-in GPS the older version could not boast of. To use the GPS option, users need to activate it from the menu, which will then open them the camera to many new features. Uploading the pictures on Flickr for example, will automatically tag the picture and locate your destination on a world map.
The GPS will also give you access to Points of Interest, which can locate the nearest popular place or attraction based on your current location. Do keep in mind that the GPS feature is power hungry and will drink the battery juice like a thirsty person in a desert.
Apart from GPS, you can use the NFC and Wi-Fi to connect the camera to your smartphone. With the dedicated Wi-Fi button on the camera, you can connect it to your smartphone or tablet. The free Nikon WirelessMobileUtility app will then allow you to 1) zoom in / out, 2) take pictures, 3) view / transfer pictures.
However, the app does not allow you to change settings like shutter speed, aperture, and EV, etc. If needed, you will have to change it on the camera.
In below video, you will discover how to connect the camera to a smartphone via Wi-Fi, and the functions in the Nikon app.

Design and Build Quality

The Coolpix P610 is no Hulk in size, but still feels like a quality camera with a good grip and body. The bridge camera is lighter than most competitors in the market are, and even though some may feel it takes away a little credibility, it is an added advantage for the photographers who love shooting pictures continuously.
The rubber coating on the grip makes it a comfortable gadget to hold and makes handling it a breeze. Even though design is not the first priority for the camera lovers, the Nikon P610 still manages to impress in the overall appeal of the camera.
The P610 is almost identical to the design its previous model had, albeit a few subtle differences. Weighing in at 565 grams, it resembles a small DSLR, but despite the small form factor, you may still require a camera bag to carry it around.

As far as performance of the Nikon Coolpix P610 is concerned, it is better than can be expected of a bridge camera. The images turn out well exposed and the lens is good enough to churn out detailed photos. Especially when the conditions are favorable, you will be praising the picture quality of every image you capture.
There are a number of "Scene" options for you, including but not limited to the new "Moon" mode and "Bird-watching" mode.
Bird-watching mode Bird-watching mode
The Nikon Coolpix P610 features a new "Bird-watching" mode.
Performance wise, the P610 is a beast considering it is a bridge camera, so no complaints there. However, here are few drawbacks to the camera you may want to keep in mind.

If you thought the Nikon Coolpix P610 is not prone to any flaw, you are wrong. Primarily, if you like RAW shooting, you will be disappointed. The camera does not have the RAW shooting option, which might be important to many photographers.
Secondly, given the size of the camera, it weighs a little more than one would expect. At 565 grams, the camera can start to feel heavy after an hour or two of constant use. Add to the fact that it does not have manual focus mode, and some professional photographer may already be turning away. The slow camera lens is also another reason why one should at least consider a few alternatives.
One more point that will disappoint some users is the lack of filters and hoods one can use in the camera without an adapter. If you find it important, you will be required to buy Kiwifotos P600K 6-in-1 Lens Kit. The lens kit comes with a lens adapter. Simply screw it onto the Nikon P610, then you will be allowed to use any filters (like UV, CPL, ND), lens cap, and lens hood with the Nikon Coolpix P610.
Below you will see the Nikon P610 with the Kiwifotos lens kit attached.

With the lens adpater in Kiwifotos P600K 6-in-1 Lens Kit, you can use filters and lens hoods on the Nikon Coolpix P610.

Nikon P610 v.s. Canon SX60 v.s. Sony HX400V v.s. Panasonic FZ70

The Nikon Coolpix P610 comes with a price tag of AUD401 (as of 3 Jun 2015). However, many alternatives in market give the Coolpix P610 a run for its money, so let us look at the competition:
Canon PowerShot SX60 HS
Canon PowerShot SX60 sports an external mic jack and an added feature for camera enthusiasts that the Coolpix P610 lacks: External Flash Support. Other than that, it has an added advantage of 65x zoom instead of the 60x on our subject.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX400V
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX400V supports external flash as well along with the external mic jack the Canon shooter offers. With built-in GPS, the Cyber-shot is nothing short of an amazing alternative if the Coolpix P610 sits well with you.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70
The Panasonic Lumix FZ70 offers a better wide-angle lens compared to Coolpix P610. Like every other competitor for the P610, Lumix also supports external flash, which could in fact, be a deciding factor for many. However, it does not offer flip-out screen and has a significantly slower shutter speed.
Nikon Coolpix P610 has many worthy competitors out there, but a lot depends on the user’s preference as well. So while the Nikon shooter may have many features worth drooling over, consider your own preference when it comes to buying a camera for yourself.

Final Verdict

A well-designed body with sufficient connectivity options and amazing picture quality make the Coolpix P610 a worthy camera. The 60x zoom may not be the longest zoom in the market, but it is sufficient for a high quality picture, espcially with the "Snap-Back" button.
Even though some may complain about the non-availability of RAW shooting, it is not a reason enough to ignore the camera that includes Wi-Fi and GPS functionality in the same body. The camera is truly worth the price tag it carries.
